The West Sacramento Fire Department has the mission of protecting life, environment, and property within the City of West Sacramento. To effectively complete this mission, the Department has located five fire stations throughout the City. The five fire stations operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a combined staffing of 17 personnel on duty which includes a Battalion Chief to respond to all structure fires and other major emergencies providing Incident Command and Scene Management. Firefighters work 48-hour tours of duty. There are three work groups called "shifts." In addition to the City of West Sacramento, the Fire Department is responsible for the unincorporated area south of the city boundary to Babel Slough Road and across to the old Arcade Station on Jefferson Blvd. The Fire Department has Automatic Aid agreements with several Yolo County Fire Departments, and with the City of Sacramento Fire Department. The Fire Department has three divisions, which provide a wide range of services for the community. These divisions are: Fire Administration, Emergency Operations, and Fire Prevention/Hazardous Materials.

ISO Class 1 Department

ISO stands for Insurance Services Office. This is a group of trained, professional evaluators that evaluate municipal fire protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. Points for everything from training, water supply systems, emergency dispatch capabilities, apparatus, call volume, response times and more are thoroughly assessed and rated. The audits which determine the ratings occur every five years. ISO analyzes the relevant data using the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). The purpose of ISO is to give insurance companies a uniform system on which to base their insurance premiums. By classifying a community’s ability to suppress fires, ISO also helps the community evaluate their public fire protection services. The final rating ranges from Class 1 (superior fire protection) to 10 (minimal fire protection). Historically, very few cities receive the coveted “Class 1” rating. Of the nearly 50,000 rated cities across the United States, less than one half of 1% of cities receive a “Class 1” rating. During its 2016 audit, the City of West Sacramento received a “Class 1” rating. A “Class 1A” was also awarded to the rural area, which is the highest rural rating available. As insurance companies typically utilize the classification to assist in determining premiums, the new classification has the potential for financial savings for homeowners and business owners alike.

Youth Fire Academy

We are looking for motivated individuals that work well with others, who have an interest in learning what it takes to become a firefighter, and those who want to get hands-on experience with various firefighter skills. Our goal of the West Sacramento Fire Department Youth Fire Academy is to host a fire camp that educates a diverse group of local high school youth about the fire service as a career in a fun, safe, supportive team environment. Vehicle Accident

At 10:09 am Thursday, March 21, WSFD responded to several 911 reports of a multi-vehicle accident on WB US50 , just west of Jefferson Boulevard.  Upon arrival, WSFD crews determined that there were 4 vehicles involved, one of which was on fire, with the other 3 showing signs of major damage.   WSFD crews began extinguishing the burning car, while additional WSFD crews began assessing involved parties for injuries.  Crews determined that 3 occupants had sustained injuries necessitating ambulance transport, and they were transported to the hospital by ambulance.  WSFD personnel completed extinguishing the vehicle fire and remained on scene shortly thereafter to assist CHP with clearing debris from the highway.

Youth Firesetter Program Academy

During the week of March 11^th, Firefighter Brashear participated in a Youth Firesetter Academy, as an instructor, in partnership with the Firefighters Burn Institute. These academies are an important service for our community to help youth firesetters and their families received the help they need through education, diversion, assessment, and psychological services to prevent future fires, injuries, and arson crimes.

 Residential Fire

On Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 8:14pm, WSFD crews responded to reports of a house fire on the 1800 block of Michigan Boulevard. Upon arrival, the first due engine observed smoke coming from the garage and attic and made entry through the front door with hose lines.  Crews confirmed a working fire inside the garage, and quickly accessed it and began extinguishment.  Subsequent arriving crews checked for fire extension into the attic and performed salvage operations to protect the contents of the home from smoke and water damage.  Crews confirmed all occupants were out of the house safely and there were no injuries.  The fire is currently under investigation.
